A Park with More Than a Century of History
Founded in 1894
Shimizu Park opened on April 3, 1894, during Japan’s Meiji period. It was established by Motegi Hakuei, the fifth-generation head of Kashiwaya, a family involved in the soy sauce brewing industry in Noda.
The park was created as a place where local residents could relax and enjoy nature. For more than a century, it has developed while maintaining its connection with the surrounding natural environment.
Inspired by the Natural World
One of the ideas behind the park was to provide modern visitors with an opportunity to experience a way of life connected to nature, inspired by the natural lifestyle of the Jōmon period, Japan’s prehistoric era.
The park’s motto, “Friends with Nature,” reflects its long-standing emphasis on enjoying and living alongside the natural environment.
A Landscape with Ancient Roots
The area around present-day Shimizu Park is believed to have been part of an inlet of Old Tokyo Bay during the Jōmon period. Archaeological sites, including shell middens, have been discovered in the surrounding region.
This geological and historical background has contributed to the area’s diverse natural environment. Today, the park’s extensive greenery provides habitats for a variety of plants and animals.
One of Japan’s Largest Field Athletic Courses
100 Challenges in the Forest
For visitors looking for an active experience, one of the park’s biggest attractions is its field athletic course. The course features approximately 100 different challenges and is regarded as one of the largest facilities of its kind in Japan.
The course combines physical strength, balance, agility, and coordination. One of its most popular sections is the water course, where some of the obstacles are positioned above a pond.
The challenges can be demanding, making the course especially appealing to visitors who enjoy outdoor adventure. At times, the facilities have even been used as training grounds by professional stunt performers and rescue teams.
A Facility for Active Families
The field athletic course is particularly popular with families, groups of friends, and school excursions. Visitors can enjoy a physical challenge while surrounded by trees and the natural scenery of the park.
Because some attractions involve water or difficult obstacles, visitors should check current operating conditions and any age, height, or safety requirements before participating.
Seasonal Flowers Throughout the Park
Cherry Blossoms in Spring
Shimizu Park is one of Chiba’s best-known destinations for cherry blossom viewing. Approximately 2,000 cherry trees representing around 50 varieties are planted throughout the grounds.
Somei Yoshino cherry trees are particularly beautiful during the spring blooming season. When the blossoms reach their peak, the park becomes a popular destination for hanami, the traditional Japanese custom of enjoying cherry blossoms.
The approach from Shimizu-kōen Station is also lined with cherry trees, creating a beautiful corridor of blossoms before visitors even reach the main park grounds. Cherry trees can also be found around the outer areas of the park.
The park’s reputation is reflected in its inclusion in Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots, selected by the Japan Sakura Association.
Azalea Festival in Spring
After the cherry blossom season, the park takes on a different appearance as its extensive azalea gardens come into bloom. Approximately 20,000 azalea plants representing 100 varieties cover an area of around 70,000 square meters.
Large numbers of Ōmurasaki azaleas provide vivid color throughout the grounds. The annual Azalea Festival is generally held from late April to early May, when the gardens are filled with red, pink, purple, and other shades of flowers.
The Rare Azumakanoko Azalea
One particularly interesting plant is the rare Azumakanoko, a wild mountain azalea. It is said to be found nowhere else in the Kanto region in the same form as at Shimizu Park.
Rather than being heavily shaped, these plants are allowed to retain their natural growth forms. Their distinctive appearance makes them a special attraction for visitors interested in Japanese plants and traditional garden landscapes.
Autumn Foliage
Shimizu Park is not only a spring destination. In autumn, approximately 800 Japanese maple trees, including Iroha-momiji, turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
The changing colors of the deciduous trees create a completely different atmosphere from spring. Visitors can therefore enjoy the park as a destination for both hanami in spring and autumn leaf viewing.
Flower Fantasy: Haná Fantasia
A Large Seasonal Flower Garden
Haná Fantasia is a dedicated flower garden covering approximately 70,000 square meters along the Zao River. Opened in 2002, it provides another way to enjoy the park’s changing seasonal scenery.
Flowers bloom at different times of the year, creating changing landscapes throughout the garden. The garden is particularly appealing to visitors who enjoy photography, leisurely walks, and colorful seasonal flowers.
Admission fees for Haná Fantasia can vary depending on the season, so visitors should check the latest official information before traveling.
Other Outdoor Facilities
Activities for Families and Groups
In addition to the field athletic course and flower garden, Shimizu Park offers a variety of free and paid facilities. These include a boating pond and camping facilities, providing opportunities for visitors to spend more time outdoors.
The park is also frequently used for school and kindergarten excursions. Its combination of open spaces, natural scenery, and recreational facilities makes it suitable for both families and larger groups.
The Former Aqua Venture Attraction
A Unique Fountain Maze
Until 2020, Shimizu Park also featured Aqua Venture, a unique fountain maze described as the world’s first facility of its kind. Visitors navigated through a maze while water sprayed from fountains around them.
The attraction became popular for its playful and exciting experience, particularly during warm weather. It was later closed as part of plans for redevelopment and renewal of the park’s facilities.
The Development of Shimizu Park
Expansion and Improvements
Since its establishment in 1894, Shimizu Park has undergone repeated expansion and improvement. A major redevelopment took place in 1929 under the guidance of Seiroku Honda, a forestry professor and forestry expert at the University of Tokyo.
This work included significant improvements to the park and the expansion of what became the second park area.
Modern Attractions
In 2002, the opening of Haná Fantasia added a large flower garden along the Zao River. Improvements to the field athletic facilities and camping areas have also expanded the park’s appeal as an outdoor recreation destination.
The park has continued to adapt its facilities to changing visitor needs, including renovations and improvements to its outdoor attractions.
The Name “Shimizu KOUEN”
How the Park’s Name Appears in English
International visitors may notice that the park’s official English-style name is sometimes written as “SHIMIZU KOUEN” rather than the more conventional English translation “Shimizu Park.”
“Shimizu KOUEN” is used on the official website, social media, and at the park entrance. However, some official materials also use “SHIMIZU PARK”, so both forms may be encountered.
The nearby railway station is commonly written as Shimizu-kōen Station, helping visitors identify the station associated with the park.
Visiting Shimizu Park in Every Season
Spring
Spring is one of the most popular times to visit. Cherry blossoms fill the park in late March and early April, followed by the colorful azalea gardens from late April into early May.
Summer
Summer is ideal for enjoying outdoor activities and spending time in the park’s green surroundings. The field athletic course and other recreational facilities provide active ways to enjoy the warmer months.
Autumn
In autumn, the park’s maple and other deciduous trees change color. The foliage provides a peaceful setting for walking and photography.
Winter
Winter offers a quieter atmosphere, allowing visitors to appreciate the park’s landscape without the crowds associated with the major flower seasons. The changing appearance of the trees and gardens also reveals another side of Shimizu Park.
A Perfect Combination of Nature and Adventure
Shimizu Park is a destination where visitors can experience both the beauty of Japanese nature and the excitement of outdoor recreation. Its long history, extensive greenery, seasonal flowers, and wide variety of facilities make it appealing to travelers of different ages.
