Hot Spring Water and Its Characteristics
Distinctive Brown-Colored Water
The water of Katsuura Onsen has a distinctive light brown color, sometimes described locally as resembling cola. It is a chloride spring, a type of hot spring water containing chloride salts that is commonly associated with warm, soothing bathing experiences.
The water is also popularly described as being gentle on the skin, with visitors often seeking it for its reputed beauty and moisturizing benefits.
The original spring water has a temperature of approximately 18°C, which is relatively cool for a natural hot spring. It is therefore heated before being supplied to the bathing facilities.
