A Superb Location for Panoramic Views
Uomizuka Observatory stands on a hill at the eastern end of the Mineoka mountain range, approximately 110 meters above sea level.
From the observatory, visitors can look across Kamogawa’s urban area and see major local attractions including Maehara Beach, Kamogawa Matsushima, and Niiemon-jima Island. The scenery is particularly beautiful at sunset, when the sky and Pacific Ocean are bathed in warm evening light.
Glow-in-the-Dark Tiles and Nighttime Illumination
The second-floor observation deck is decorated with photoluminescent tiles. After dark, these tiles give off a gentle glow, creating a somewhat magical atmosphere.
The “Gyofu” goddess statue and the observatory are also illuminated for approximately one hour from 9:00 p.m., offering a romantic nighttime view that is quite different from the daytime scenery.
The Origin of the Name “Uomizuka”
A Lookout Used by Fishermen
The hill where the observatory stands was traditionally used by local fishermen to watch for schools of fish offshore. The name “Uomizuka” literally refers to a place associated with watching for fish, reflecting the area’s long connection with fishing.
The historic name has survived to the present day and provides a glimpse into the traditional life of Kamogawa’s coastal communities.
“Chikai-no-Oka” – A Sacred Place for Lovers
The Goddess Statue “Gyofu” and a Promise of Love
A distinctive goddess statue called “Gyofu”, created by sculptor Subaru Hasegawa, stands at the observatory. The area around the statue is known as “Chikai-no-Oka,” or the Hill of Vows, where couples come to make promises of love.
According to local tradition, couples who make a vow of love in front of the statue and attach a special lock are said to be blessed with happiness that continues into the future.
Where to Buy a Vow Lock
The special “vow locks” can be purchased at tourist facilities, souvenir shops, hotels, and ryokan inns throughout Kamogawa City.
The Hill of Vows was renovated in March 2012, further establishing it as a special destination for couples visiting Kamogawa.
