Inubosaki

The earliest spot in Japan for sunrise on the first day of the year

The cape juts out into the Pacific Ocean and has a lighthouse at its tip.
The warm and cold currents collide, creating a strange landscape of sea-eroded rocks.

Located near the mouth of the Tone River (a first-class river), one of the three major rivers in Japan, the entire area is a scenic spot on the Choshi Peninsula, which is included in the Suigo Tsukuba National Park. The surrounding Cretaceous Period strata are designated as a national natural monument.

The scenic coastline has been visited by numerous writers and artists, and the area is well known as a place of great writers, with many monuments to poets and poems along the coastline.

Known as a difficult place on the sea, the Inubosaki Lighthouse was built in 1874, facing the Pacific Ocean.
It is one of Japan’s representative lighthouses and has been selected as one of the 100 best lighthouses in the world and one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan.

Because of its high historical and cultural value, it was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Next to the entrance of the lighthouse, there is a round mailbox (Mailbox 1) painted white to match the color of the lighthouse.
