Fruit Cultivated in Minamiboso’s Mild Climate
Loquats generally grow well in areas where the average annual temperature is 15°C or higher and the minimum temperature does not fall below -5°C. Because of these climatic requirements, loquat cultivation is limited in Japan, with very little commercial production north of Chiba Prefecture.
The mild climate of southern Chiba, particularly the Minamiboso region, provides favorable conditions for growing these distinctive fruits. The combination of warm temperatures and protection from severe winter cold helps produce large, juicy loquats.
Two Harvest Seasons: Greenhouse and Open-Grown Loquats
The season for Boshu loquats varies depending on how they are cultivated. Greenhouse-grown loquats are generally at their peak in May, while open-grown loquats are in season around June.
The short harvest season makes Boshu loquats a particularly special taste of early summer. Their bright appearance, juicy texture, and refreshing flavor make them a fruit worth seeking out when visiting Minamiboso.
