Minami-Boso City and Tateyama City are located at the southernmost tip of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, they enjoy a mild climate, and their main industries are fishing and flower cultivation.
Katsuura is located in the southeastern part of Chiba Prefecture and has a thriving fishing industry. Katsuura Fishing Port lands skipjack, tuna, and snapper, with skipjack in particular being one of the top landings in Japan. Kamogawa is located in the southeastern part of the Boso Peninsula, facing the Pacific Ocean, and its representative industry is fishing.
When discussing the gourmet foods of Minami-Boso and Tateyama cities, one cannot leave out nameko (nameko mushroom). It is a dish made by pounding horse mackerel or sardines with miso, ginger, and other condiments. It was eaten by fishermen on board their boats, and is now available at many restaurants in Minami-Boso.
It is called "nameko" because it is so delicious that it makes you want to lick the plate. The grilled nameko is called "sangayaki," which is also a delicacy to be enjoyed.
Katsuura has a large catch of bonito, so fresh bonito can be tasted as sashimi. There is also a fisherman's dish called "Magonchazuke," which is bonito soaked in soy sauce with ginger, served on rice and topped with tea.
There is also a local ramen called Katsuura tantanmen, which is different from the usual tantanmen with sesame seeds. It is served not only at ramen shops but also at coffee shops, and is so popular that it has even become a cup ramen.
Kamogawa has a local delicacy called "oragadon. It is a bowl of rice topped with ingredients from Kamogawa, and each restaurant serves it in a variety of styles, such as kaisendon-style or tendon-style. Please enjoy the unique characteristics of each oragadon.
The morning market in Katsuura is nationally famous and is one of the largest morning markets in Japan. The market attracts many shoppers with seafood landed at the Katsuura fishing port and farm products grown by local farmers.
Kamogawa is one of the best surfing spots in Japan, and many surf stores line the streets. Every year on the first Sunday in June, the Kamogawa City Cup surfing competition is held.
Kamogawa Sea World is also a popular aquarium, and many resort hotels are located in the surrounding area.
